Before even graduating high school, I accumulated over nine months of political experience, working both in official Austin City Council offices and working on a campaign for the office of Mayor of the City of Austin.
On the official side, I served as the Media Relations intern in the City Hall and field offices for Austin's District 6 council member. I worked on press releases, media advisories, and assisted in writing speaking remarks and talking points for the Councilwoman. In addition, I did graphic design for multiple events and did a full logo redesign for the office. I assisted all staff in their duties, including handling constituent concerns, staffing the Councilwoman at events, and opening and closing the office.
On the campaign side, I organized and participated in poll-greeting & sign distribution to homes and polling places across Austin's Williamson County region, participated in block walks, and conveyed the candidate's policies to voters. As a specialist in the 18-25 year old demographic, I provided counsel to the campaign manager on trends and opinions of local youth.
In concurrence with my political work, I served as the Managing Editor of Westwood Student Press, my high school's student journalism & literary program for two and a half years. I managed a 50+ person student newsroom, balancing strategy and operations while also bridging editorial leadership with administrative accountability. Many of my duties involved business management, record-keeping, keeping track of accountability & feedback, various administrative duties, and responding to and addressing official correspondence.
I facilitated communication among all departments and stakeholders (Faculty adviser, student body, school and district administration, etc.). I also coordinate with department heads (three Editors-in-Chief and our Marketing Director) to maximize effectiveness of program. This required being familiar with all aspects of news, yearbook, and magazine production, as well as school district administrative & financial processes.
